Entrepreneurs pitch for over $6,000 in prizes at Seed Your Startup
On Thursday, April 6th, six student startups took to Propel’s stage for the sixth annual Seed Your Startup pitch competition. Entrepreneurs from Western University and Fanshawe College pitched in front of a live audience and panel of judges for a shot at winning their share of over $6000 in seed funding.
Seed Your Startup is designed to help young entrepreneurs make the transition from ideas to formalized action plans, with the opportunity to win funding. The 2017 installment of the event differed from previous years, as the grand prize was divided into two categories: one $3,000 technology/ service pitch prize and one $3,000 retail/ product pitch prize.
Seed Your Startup 2017 brought in over 100 applications, the highest number in the competition’s history. The calibre of contestants was apparent at the final pitch event. Finalists included: Beatcamp, BloxOffice, Ellia and Co., Fr8 Living Solutions, Grammit, and Hypercare.
The judges were faced with a difficult decision, and after much deliberation, the panel chose the two winning teams:Beatcamp(Technology Pitch Prize)
About: Beatcamp is an online marketplace to license instrumental music.
Many of the entrepreneurs who participated in this year’s event have also worked closely with Western’s Entrepreneurship Centre, Propel. Winner, Haishan Qian, actively encourages any student take advantage of campus programing and resources. “I don’t think students realize how many opportunities there are on campus. I wish I knew about Propel in my first year. The learning experience, the people, the atmosphere – is amazing. Without Propel, Grammit would not be where it is today.”
“Seed Your Startup is a great opportunity for student entrepreneurs to experience the competitive nature of starting and operating a business,” said Ian Haase, Director of Propel. “It’s been very gratifying to see our past winners go on to achieve success in their entrepreneurial pursuits and we look forward to seeing Beatcamp and Grammit do the same.”
Contestant and winner of Seed Your Startup’s Peoples Choice Award, Bryn Davis, emphasizes how the competition helped her business: “Seed Your Startup and Propel have allowed me to see my business, Ellia and Co., as a reality. The fear of failure is a huge barrier that I personally face as the entrepreneur, and the support and validation this competition gave me has been a turning point in launching my startup.”
